Nicola Roberts: Beat of my Drum

Nicola Roberts from Girls Aloud steps out on her own with a new album and new single Dance to the Beat of my Drum. I can definitely see it being a future hit with its catchy lyrics and beat, drawing the young teens, Girls Aloud crowd and the fringes of the electro crowd.

To me this video screams that it was made in the UK. It's like the Ting Tings meets Hadouken! The dance moves in the video showcase a young girl having fun, but also demonstrate a vulnerability Nicola is known for, often being the odd ginger girl, not obviously pretty, which drew the most negative criticism in the Girls Aloud days. Nicola plays on her vulnerability with her sometimes-hesitant dance moves and the way she looks at the camera. In the chorus she reaches her strength, but it's in the verse and bridge we really start to get to know her. In a video aimed at the British market I think this is a clever move, as the Brits are known for their self-deprecation and modesty. Put simply, we love an underdog.

In terms of the fashion, there's no question she's doing things better now than in the Girls Aloud days, and there's some fun fashion in this video with more than half a nod to the colourblocking trend, fringing, geometric and clashing prints and the 80s, but the one thing that stuck in my mind was those pants. Nicola has a slim, petite figure and although she has a great set of pins in my opinion these pants do nothing for her. On the other hand, I love the jumper above. The colour is cleverly positioned so the nude stripe is across her chest which hints at some exposure without giving any.

What do you think of Nicola's first single?

  1. I absolutely love this song and I can't stop dancing to it! Much better than anything Cheryl or Nadine have put out.

Plus I love her tribal style
