What does glamour mean to you?

I've been reading Pigeons & Peacocks, the magazine of the London College of Fashion. You can currently get the latest issue for free (inc. free delivery) over on their website here. I'd really recommend it, it's fabulous quality and like a coffee table book, you'd pay at least £15 for this from a bookshop or museum. There are loads of full spread pictures and really interesting articles.

In the magazine they had a really interesting quote:

"Do you know what glamour is?
It's fear. If people are afraid, you can do anything."

- Reginald, in the film 'The Krays' about the brother east London gangsters (1990)

This actually reminded me of the 'high fashion' world. People with enough 'status' (or money) like Anna Wintour and Phillip Green (owner of Topshop+ Arcadia Group), regardless of what they've actually achieved, can command a high degree of fear (and fawning), and harnessing that fear, can promote and produce anything they want.

Fashion in particular can utilize that consumer fear of not looking glamorous (the flip side of desiring the fantasy of beauty) unless you do what the people with status tell you to do i.e. Vogue. An example is Anna Wintour, via Vogue, telling you to dress and look a certain way and you can be as glamerous as her. People fear her because she looks fierce and tough- glamerous. Because she looks glamerous, people fear her, and she can command them.

Glamour, in this way, is another way of harnessing power in the fashion world. This can be power over other's behaviour (how they react to your clothes), power over how you present your appearance, and power over how you 'fit in'- what subculture are you emulating today?

"Any girl can be glamerous...all you have to do is sit there and look stupid."
-Hedy Lamarr

"Like charity, I believe glamour should begin at home."
-Loretta Young

"Romance is the glamour which turns the dust of everyday life into a golden haze."
-Carolyn Gold Heilbrun

"For every two minutes of glamour, there are eight hours of hard work."
-Jessica Savitch

"Glamour cannot exist without personal social envy being a common and widespread emotion."
-John Berger

Which quote do you like best? What does glamour mean to you?

  2. When I was sending round for university perspectuses I got a copy (current at the time but not now) and I so agree that the magazine is the kind one would pay a lot for! It had such impressive content.

Hedy Lamarr's quote makes me go 'Oh dear'. I like Carolyn Gold Heilbrun's, Loretta Young's and Jessica Savitch's for different reasons.

    Really interesting post.

  3. Thanks for your comment Florrie! Yes, Hedy Lemarr's quote is a bit unfortunate. It does make me think a bit about how it relates to celebrities these days and what 'glamour' means in 'glamour modelling'!
